Don't Place All Of Your Eggs In One Basket

"Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let not your hands be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well". Ecclesiastes 11:2, 6

One day on the way to a business planning class, a friend and I had a conversation about the economy. She was expressing her concerns about the industry she was employed in, and how unpredictable it was. We discussed how people are dispensable, easily thrown away like trash. We then bemoaned the fact that once you lose a job, it may take a while before you are even able to become stable again.

Later on that night, I kept thinking about the old saying “don’t lay all of your eggs in one basket”. I searched the internet to see if that saying was biblical. After a few minutes I stumbled across a reference to Ecclesiastes 11:2, 6. “Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let not your hands be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.”

I honestly believe this confirms the saying “don’t lay all of your eggs in one basket”. In today’s shaky economy you really need to have different “baskets” or multiple streams of income. It doesn’t matter if you have been working for a company that is over 150 years old, or if you are self-employed. You need to “sow” the money that you have into good soil and allow it to grow. Make sure that the money that you do make from your primary income source isn’t your sole source. If that folds, then what are you going to do?

Returning to the Past

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the LORD, "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it".

I know that you have all heard the saying that "history repeats itself". I used to equate that with only meaning that one should be careful of the decisions that they make in life. However, I am coming to the realization that "history" repeating itself can be a good thing. God has error free principles that we can learn. Principles which have withstood the test of time. Principles that transcends time; eternal principles. It does not matter if it was tried in 900 B.C., 1365 AD, or today.

Here is one that is really standing out in my life at the moment. Ecclesiastes 11:2,6
