Why Bother?

This morning I was thinking about a situation that I have been praying about for years.  I have not seen much physical change and as I was getting my thoughts together for morning prayer I heard a voice say, "Why Bother".  At first, I thought that I was thinking that thought.  However, seconds later, my mind became flooded with thoughts of doubt, unbelief, and discouragement.  All of a sudden I went from feeling hopeful to feeling hopeless.

Beloved, the Enemy gets into our minds by speaking lying words.  He takes advantage of the fact that we may have hit a brick wall.  We may be patiently waiting on the manifestation of a promise, however it appears that nothing is happening.  Sometimes the situation would even appear to be getting worse.

These lying words are shot into our minds because Satan is a master illusionist.  Illusions are distortions of reality through the use of our senses.  Our perception of what we see and hear are often used as tools of deception that keeps us defeated.  The Enemy loves to make a situation look as bleak as possible.

Let's say that you have been praying for your brother to be delivered from alcoholism.  God may have been dealing with him constantly for years even.  God has sent people to come across your brother's path to witness to them quite often.  You brother may been almost at the verse of surrounding his life to God and trying to rid himself of alcoholism.

However, we stop at Starbucks one morning and see our brother sitting a table and having a lighthearted conversation with a couple of old drinking buddies from college.  When we see our brother with the old drinking buddies, we grab our jacket and immediately storm out the Starbucks angry and upset.  We may conclude that he must have been drinking all night with friends and they are now in Starbucks trying to sober up.  Next thing you know, we are driving down the street sobbing to God that our prayers are no use.  We may have even gotten mad at God for "taking so long".

Suddenly the Enemy clouds our minds with thoughts of "your prayers are not working", "give up", and even "they're not going to ever change, so maybe God wants you to pray about something else".  However, this may not be the case at all.  God may have delivered those "old drinking buddies" from alcohol and sent them to Starbucks in order to speak encouraging words to your loved one.  They may even know that your brother is suffering from alcohol addiction.  He may have even reached out to his old friends for help.  However, we allowed our presumptions and our impatience to cause us to draw the wrong conclusions.

This is a prime example of why we cannot give up on prayer.  The Word states that we are to "pray without ceasing" 2 Thessalonians 5:17.  We never know what God is doing behind the scenes and what is happening in the person's most innermost being.

I am going through this 'why bother to pray' phase. I have been seeking God for a very long time about a situation and it appears that its only gettng worse.
Now I dont know if I am praying amiss or if God just isn't in it.

Don't get discouraged because it will appear to get worse before it get's better. Just keep praying and ask God what is going on exactly with your prayers. Maybe you should try praying about it in the Spirit. God Bless.
