Are you in a place where it seems as though everything is moving slowly? Perhaps you are holding on to a promise, yet years or even decades have passed without seeing its fulfillment. What are we supposed to do when the journey takes much longer than we expected?
This passage reminds us that God sometimes leads us along the longer route.
The Israelites could have reached their destination more quickly by traveling through Philistine territory, but God knew they were not prepared for the battles they would encounter there. The shorter road was available, but it was not the safest road for them at that time.
Sometimes our own journeys feel like unexpected detours. Our destination may appear to be only ten minutes away, but then we encounter an orange sign in the road that reads, “Detour.” Suddenly, we are traveling through unfamiliar back roads and side streets. By the time we finally arrive, a ten-minute trip has taken an hour.
God often allows similar detours in our personal lives. We may be moving confidently in one direction when circumstances suddenly shift and the path changes. Although we may feel confused or surprised by the turn of events, God is not.
He sees everything that lies ahead.
He sees the potholes, obstacles, dangers, and debris that could delay us, discourage us, or cause us to turn back. What feels like an ready to face the Philistines. Their outward appearance suggested strength, but God understood the condition of their hearts. He chose the longer route because He knew exactly what they needed.
So, do not become discouraged when God leads you on a detour. Seek His face, remain sensitive there.
Do not become discouraged when God takes you along an unexpected route. Seek His face, remain sensitive to His Spirit, and continue following His direction. The road may be longer than you imagined, but God knows exactly where He is leading you.
Sometimes the detour is the very thing that preserves you, prepares you, and brings you safely into the promise.
