Praying in the Will of God used to be something that was puzzling to me. I used to think that there was a prescribed formula for prayer that you needed to follow precisely. However, the above text is very telling. Could praying amiss be linked to having a wrong heart motive?
In James 4:3 it is explained that some ask and do not receive because they will spend the answer to their prayers on their own pleasures. This indicates that our answered prayers are linked to our most inward motives. Let's say you want to become wealthy and you ask God to prosper you abundantly. However, would the prayer be answered if God knows that your heart motive is to spend the wealth on yourself.
Or let's say that you desire to be married but it is driven by lust, instead of love. Should God allow you to ruin another person's life since lust is short-lived and you would just move on to the next person who catches your eye?
These are just a couple of things to consider when experiencing unanswered prayer. What are our heart motives?
