The Civil War helped accelerate the development of the ready-to-wear clothing market we have today.

Before the war, much of a person’s clothing was made at home or tailored to fit the individual. However, the military needed uniforms produced quickly and in large quantities. Manufacturers began using standardized measurements to create clothing for thousands of soldiers.

After the war, this system of mass production expanded into the general clothing market. Instead of having every garment made specifically for one person, people could purchase clothing in standard sizes.

It is interesting how a major historical event can influence something as ordinary as the way we shop for clothes today.
