One of my main goals for 2022 was to rebuild and deepen my relationship with God.
Along the way, I realized that one of my biggest stumbling blocks was social media—especially YouTube. Unlike traditional television, where you have to wait for your favorite show or flip through channels when nothing’s on, YouTube offers 24/7 access to endless content tailored to your interests. With billions of videos available at your fingertips, it’s easy to fall into a rabbit hole, hopping from one video to the next for hours on end.
Now don’t get me wrong—YouTube has its benefits. It’s how I started my natural hair care journey. It opened doors for me to explore new topics, cultures, and lifestyles. If I wanted to “travel” to Kenya, Italy, or Japan, all I had to do was type it in. I’ve watched videos on farming, truck driving, and so many other things I never imagined I’d find fascinating. It became a form of escapism—my personal portal to anywhere.
But somewhere along the way, I noticed a shift. I was spending less time with God. My appetite for reading books, which I once loved, started to fade. I began to crave visual and audio stimulation over quiet moments with a page. Unfortunately, that mindset crept into my spiritual life too. I found myself reading the Bible less and less simply because it was in "book form." I remember reading a chapter in Genesis and getting bored—wishing I could just rush to the end.
That’s when I knew something had to change.
Now, I’m making intentional efforts to realign my priorities. I’ve committed to reading my Bible first thing in the morning—before turning on my laptop, before checking my phone, before diving into the noise of the day. It’s my way of training my spirit to seek God first, above everything else. It takes discipline, but it's worth it.
