The Secret Place of the Most High

"He who abides in the secret place of the Most High will dwell in the Shadow of the Almighty" Psalm 91:1

The opening verse to Psalm 91 has always stuck me with a shroud of mystery.  Often referred to as the "Psalm of Protection" I have often wondered what does it mean to abide in the secret place of the Most High?  This secret place obviously benefits us in our walk with God.

The word "abide" is a verb, an action word.  When we are abiding in Him, we are actively doing it.  Abide in Hebrew is "yashab" which means to literally take a seat and remain.  We are actively remaining, we are not jittery or fidgeting around waiting for something to happen.   We are not running in and out of the "secret place", or trying to stay occasionally.  We are seated here.

Now let us look at "secret place" for a moment.  "Secret Place" means "cether" in Hebrew which describes a covering, cloud, hiding place.  It is even referred to as a womb.   Inside of the womb a baby is developing, and everything the baby needs to grow is right there.  The womb is inside the woman's body, deeply hidden when conception takes place.  It is a safe place full of fluid and muscle and membranes that protects the baby.  The baby is kept there until it is time to give birth.

God wants us to come into the secret place when we are going through trials and tribulations.  He does not want us to run to drugs, alcohol, sex, etc when we are trying to alleviate stressful situations.  He wants us to come into the divine womb, the secret place where He can truly care for us and bring us into a place of abundance and unspeakable joy.
